Why Fremantle?

Why Fremantle?

I caught up with Jules to have a chat about why Wassup Dog has opened it’s cradty, new gourmet hot dog bistro in the heart of Fremantle.

Hot Dogs are makings waves in Fremantle, people already enjoy the fabulous bratwurst hot dogs sold for 6 years at Run Amuk on South Terrace.

Jules has always been a fan and is absolutely stoked to bring the flavour of Wassup Dog to the city in a more permanent home, 7 days a week.

The doors of Wassup Dog Gourmet Hot Dogs Fremantle (which incidentally prides itself on fresh Freo coffee to dine in or takeaway) have been open for nearly 5 months now and Jules said that “Being in Freo is everything, it means a lot, it’s where I have started.”

Fremantle has a rich and varied history, both ancient and modern. We have the oldest building in the state, the major port as well as being the heart of culture in the city. Fremantle is the place you have to bring any visitors to Perth.

When asked what he liked most about Freo, Jules said emphatically “The people! And Mojo’s” with a Snoop Dogg smile.

Fremantle has a strong business culture and a lot of foot traffic, so Wassup Dog is in the perfect position at 32 Market St to introduce as many people as they can to the crew and the taste.

Fremantle has a social consciousness and community vibe that is rare in Australia and Wassup Dog has a special love for anything and anybody that “makes Freo different and weird”.

Wassup Dog is just as much a community as a business and Jules said that “Wassup Dog love that more and more people want to be involved in what we do and the banter at the shop in Fremantle is always strong.”

I asked Jules how Run Amuk and Wassup Dog can make even better hot dogs and he replied that “competition is amazing, even if there is no such thing. We will both try and improve and perfect our dogs, it will bring the quality up on both sides and will attract more people. Competition is so important for business, if you have a small cafe and you are not happy about another one opening up next door then sorry; you are not business minded.”

Come down and see the lads for some market fresh cuisine and stay at our Frematle coffee shop & bistro takeaway for some Playstation, Connect 4, Hip Hop, coffee and French banter.

Vegan Dogs

The vegan dog was a way to involve everybody in Wassup Dog. We understand that many people love hot dogs but do not like to eat meat or dairy products. We make fresh vegan sausages out of sweet potato and chickpea with rosemary, salt and pepper so that vegetarians and vegans can also know Wassup.

The big saying is “Make love not war” so even the biggest meat lovers have been digging the Wassup vegan dogs.

Jules is excited about the vegan dogs, he said “We have one famous vegan dog on the menu plus one special every tuesday night !! God damn Tuesday”.

He said that Wassup Dog Fremantle is “packed as” on the Tuesday Vegan night and that he has seen and heard some great reactions to the dogs like this one.. “CHEESE on a vegan Dog! DAMMMNNNN I am in!”

We also started the Vegan tuesday last year as a way of getting people together to share a conscious meal and get the word out about the options for vegans and vegetarians at Wassup Dog.

At the time of writing, after only 6 weeks of Vegan food night there is already a large following and the Wassup chefs are flowing like Kendrick Lamar every Tuesday to bring all that vegan goodness and homemade vegan cheese to the crowd at both our Fremantle bistro and East Perth bistro.

Wassup Dog knows that eating vegan can still be quite difficult at restaurants and fast food places as well as creating awkward situations with large groups of people, so they love to offer this delicious option and Jules said “it makes us so happy to see the surprised and stoked reactions of people who eat our vegan dogs.”

So don’t forget the Motto – “Make love not war”, hope to see you at a Wassup Dog Vegan Night soon! These vegan food options are available at either our East Perth dine in or takeaway restaurant/cafe or our Freo cafe/restaurant. Get down there or you can always order home delivery.

The Fremantle markets are such a richly diverse place. Locals can buy goods from around the world and international travellers can get a feeling of local craft, culture and produce. It is a coming together of happy people enjoying their days off.

Wassup Dog started off at the markets and has been smashing out gourmet hot dogs for 3 years, developing its style, flavour and craft – turning hot dogs into a tasty art; the French way

The Fremantle Wassup Dog store is the latest baby and opened on the 17th of October 2016. That could never have happened without the Freo community loving our dogs and inspiring us to keep working hard every day striving to bring you new ideas and the freshest, tastiest dogs every day of the week.

Jules personally likes the Fremantle markets so much for the “fresh local produce and because they know Wassup.”

Since humble beginnings at the first hot dog cart at the markets, Freo has come to know Wassup Dog because “even being a French man, we are local, we started in Freo at Mojo’s, at the South Freo and Fremantle markets and people know we are part of Freo”.

Jules continued and said that the development of the vegan dog has gotten a lot of love from the community and said that the “locals love them!”

When the new Fremantle cafe restaurant opened 5 months ago, Wassup Dog consolidated and stopped doing the markets, however they are still serving up for weddings, birthdays and hope to be back one day soon to the markets.

“It all started in Fremantle, because it was practical, easy to move around without a lease and after a few weekends a Mojo’s people started to feel Wassup!”

Wassup Dog has got soul and that soul developed at the markets, from one New York style cart to two Wassup Dog bistros bringing maximum flavour and atmosphere to the people.

Hot Dogs and Hip Hop have one thing in common at Wassup Dog – “both are gangsta, gangsta”.

The hip hop inspired values have developed over 3 years of crafting dogs in Fremantle and Wassup Dog hope that you feel that vibe at the stores.

In the meantime check out or Fremantle cafe restaurant which not only offers great hotdogs, but the finest coffee both to dine in and take away (do not forget the salads, juices and desserts on our menu). We also do home delivery.
